Meet Cheryl Somers, MA, LPC

Owner/Executive Director of Connect & Thrive Therapy

Cheryl specializes in Anxiety and Conflict with Parents

Who I Serve:

1) College Students & Young Adults who are struggling with life after high school and feeling paralyzed by anxiety. I enjoy helping them see their strengths more clearly to feel empowered and capable of tackling the parts of life that feel overwhelming.

How I Can Help

I spent the early years of my career as a middle school teacher, then a school counselor, and now a therapist and parenting coach. All of these experiences have taught me that the foundation of every relationship (parent/teen, adult friendships, romantic relationships) is Connection and Communication.

I help clients of all ages identify old patterns and inner dialogue that are serving them well, and others that need to be changed. My approach to therapy is compassionate and also focused on solutions. It is important to look at our past for clues about why we communicate, respond and behave the way we do. But it is just as important to take that information and decide how we are going to use it to empower us to make changes. I enjoy helping clients understand the brain science behind anxiety, the role that early attachments and parenting plays in our lives as adults, and the power of our thoughts and beliefs as they relate to behavior. I love helping clients understand their own past, their own brain and their own behaviors better so they can start to make changes to enjoy a more fulfilling life.

My Experience

Through my work as a middle school teacher, school counselor, and therapist, I have gained a wealth of experience and training that enable me to work well with teenagers, young adults and their parents:

• I am a Licensed Professional Counselor in the state of Colorado.
• I have a Master of Arts Degree in Counseling Psychology from the University of Colorado at Denver.
• I have specialized training in self-harm and suicide prevention.

I am also the mother of 2 daughters - ages 19 and 22 — which has allowed me the opportunity to practice what I preach, make my own mistakes, and guide you through your own parenting journey with not just my knowledge and experience as a therapist, but also my lived experience as a mom.

Why I Love Therapy

There is something so sacred and beautiful about taking one hour a week to dedicate 100% to your own growth. I believe therapy allows us the space to reflect, to wonder, and to dream about what’s possible. Therapy also provides us with insights, tools and some direction to feel empowered about making important changes in our lives.

When I'm not working with clients...

I'm hanging out with my husband and two daughters, or reading, watching football and doing my best to avoid cooking! I love all kinds of books and I enjoy learning new things. And I definitely head up to the mountains to camp, ski or hike whenever I can.
